Just wondering if any one knows whether lamb's lettuce and watercress contain goitrogens. I wish to start a raw food eating regime but I have benign thyroid cysts which I'm told are sometimes caused by lack of iodine. I want to avoid eating raw goitrogenic foods as I understand these can interfere with the body's utilization of thyroid hormones. (Not really sure if this interferes with iodine uptake). I started drinking green smoothies years ago and noticed a small lump on my thyroid. I stopped the smoothies and within days the lump enlarged 10 fold. I don't think the green smoothies caused the cysts, but there was a link between the cysts getting larger and me stopping consuming the green smoothies, though I can't yet work out the possible link.
Basically, I would rather drink green smoothies which didn't contain goitrogens for the time being at least. Hence, I would like to know whether lamb's lettuce and watercress are goitrogenic. Can't find the info on the net. Would also like scientific evidence to back the claim. :-)
